Saurashtra University Overview

Saurashtra University is a state university in Gujarat State, in India. Saurashtra University was founded by eminent educationists and freedom fighters of the Saurashtra region, as a separate university from Gujarat University (Ahmedabad). In 1961, when Gujarat state was created, the demand became more prevalent. In 1965, the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat passed Gujarat Act No. 39 of 1965, which established the Saurashtra University. The Saurashtra University was founded on 23 May 1967. It had two campuses initially, Rajkot and Bhavnagar. Rajkot became the sole campus of the Saurashtra University following the incorporation of the Bhavnagar University. The university’s campus extends over an area of 363 acres. The University currently has jurisdiction in the districts of Jamnagar, Amreli, Surendranagar, Rajkot and Morbi.

Saurashtra University has multiple departments offering UG, PG, and PhD degree courses. Courses are offered in a variety of disciplines. The university has 29 postgraduate departments and 238 affiliated colleges. In order to apply for admission to any of the courses, candidates must take certain entrance exams. Additionally, the university grants admission on the basis of merit and conducts entrance exams for some courses. Few national level entrance exams like NEET PG and GCET are accepted by the University for the Remaining Courses.

The institution has outstanding infrastructure, and the classrooms have good natural lighting, are air conditioned, and are well-equipped with multimedia, computers, and LAN access. Other amenities include medical facilities, a library, laboratories, sports with outdoor games, a canteen, an auditorium, a gym, and computer labs with the most up-to-date software. Both boys and girls can stay at the college’s hostel. The rooms have a TV, a playground, an indoor gaming hall, and parking for vehicles. There is also internet connection for students, and the hostel meal serves nice, nutritious cuisine. Saurashtra University offers a variety of UG and PG courses in distance learning mode as well.
