IGNOU plan on Blockchain

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) has worked on a plan to deliver degrees using blockchain technology. Blockchain can guarantee quicker submission and authentication of educational paperwork. Blockchain Technology powers the Bitcoin ecosystem and will be linked to digitally stored academic documents in Digilocker.

What is Blockchain?

Blockchain is also known as Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). It is a database that contains a chain of the block to store information. The information or data can be related to transactions, date and time, participant details, and many more. Blockchains have transformed data storage and management by giving secure access to all the participants who are involved. It is a centralized way to safeguard all the records from theft and loss as all information is available in a single place.

Blockchain reduces the risk of Storing information

One of the biggest risks in data management is hacking. Hackers can manipulate and delete user information in the education systems. So implementing a blockchain for storing all student information will be very helpful because no modifications can happen without permission to use the online ledger.

How can Blockchain be helpful in education?

Blockchain can be profoundly applied in education. Blockchain will help in tracking students’ academic records easier. Which will the help students get verified credentials. Blockchain will also help in keeping all the information more secure and tamper-proof.

Another university has released its digital degree on IIT’s blockchain system. In the recent convocation ceremony of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), about 60 thousand students have been awarded digital degrees through the blockchain system. IIT professors wished the team all the best. No tampering or alteration can be done in the documents issued by this technique.

IITs have played an important role in developing the Blockchain Technology that was started by the central government. The Padma Shri Professor Manindra Agrawal and Professor Sandeep Shukla, in collaboration with the team, first distributed blockchain-based digital degrees at the initiation ceremony of the institute on 28 December 2021. It was inaugurated by the Prime Minister the chief guest at the ceremony. After this, the Prime Minister released the National Children’s Awards with the same technique in a program organized in Delhi. Now, this technique has also been used by Indira Gandhi National Open University to issue degrees to the students.

Director Prof. Abhay Karandikar said that based on the National Blockchain Project, now all the institutions are trying to secure their documents. It is a matter of pride for the institute. The technology has been developed by the institute’s startup Kruban under the National Blockchain Project of the National Security Council C3i.
