JNU was founded in 1969 and named after India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. In June 1970, the Indian School of International Studies merged with JNU, after which the prefix “Indian” was dropped from its name, and it became the School of International Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University. The academic departments at JNU are divided into 20 Schools and Centers.
